Case Study: Supporting a Young Adult Through Tough Times
This is the story about Alex*, an 18-year-old young adult dealing with some heavy emotions.
Alex was struggling with low mood and anxiety, following a disagreement with his mother. This caused a major rift emotionally between Alex and his mother.
This breakdown left Alex feeling very disconnected from his mother. There was always a lot of tension when they tried to talk.
They both felt ambivalent about fixing things and were unsure of how to rebuild trust and reconnect after everything that happened.
On top of all that, Alex was navigating the challenges of young adulthood, including confusion about his sexuality and experiencing some gender dysphoria.
These challenges along with the strained relationship with his mother, made it hard for him to feel like he was moving forward in life.
To help, Alex started individual counselling sessions to unpack his emotions and better understand what was going on for him. There were separate sessions with his mother, with a focus on improving communication to rebuild their relationship.
The goal was to help them understand each other better, and work towards ways to reconnect.
Going through tough family dynamics and personal challenges is never easy, especially when you’re trying to figure out who you are and where you fit in.
With the right support, Alex was able to work through these challenges, rebuild a relationship with his mother, and feel better emotionally.
If you’re feeling like you’re in a similar place, seeking counselling could be the first step toward understanding yourself and making connections that matter most.
