Child Assessments

We believe in getting the best support for your child, early. There are two assessments that clinically indicate if any other testing is needed for your child; a Cognitive Assessment, and Speech and Language Assessment.

Some questions you might have about a Cognitive Assessment

  • A Cognitive Assessment is administered by a psychologist to measure you child’s intellectual ability (IQ) and cognitive functioning, to support and enhance performance.

    1. Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) – for ages 2 years, 6 months to 7 years 7 months.

    2. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, fifth edition (WISC-V) for ages 6 years to 16 years and 11 months.

    1. Initial Meeting – To gather family / child history. This takes up p to 1 hour.

    2. Testing – The test usually takes between 60 – 90 minutes. It can take up to 2 hours.

    3. Analysis and Report Writing – This usually takes 2 weeks.

    4. Feedback Session – To share the report and test results. This takes up to 1 hour.

  • It’s a good idea to get your child tested if you have noticed:

    - any concerns about your child’s learning

    - any giftedness about your child’s learning

    - behavioural difficulties related to learning

    - slow processing of what you have said / asked them to do

    - memory issues

    - language issues.

    The outcome of the test helps determine your child’s intellectual capacity.

    It also helps to direct and support learning needs for their overall performance.

  • Some sessions for testing are covered by a Medicare Rebate.

    To be eligible for Medicare Rebate, you need to get a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.

    Medicare rebates vary depending on the therapist’s qualification and type of GP referral:

  • A Speech and Language Assessment is administered by a speech pathologist to help understand your child’s speech and language development, and diagnose language disorders.

    1. Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Preschool 3 (CELF-P3) – for ages 3 years to 6 years and 11 months.

    2. Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF-5) – for ages 5 years to 21 years and 11 months.

  • Some sessions for testing may be covered by a Medicare Rebate.

    To be eligible for Medicare Rebate, you need to get a Chronic Disease Care Plan for a Speech Pathologist. The rebate is $60.35
