Case Study: Supporting Your Child Through Anxiety and Emotional Struggles

This is about Emily* a bright and caring 7-year-old girl, and her parents who have always been very supportive and involved in her life.

Emily has been facing significant challenges with anxiety and emotional regulation and her parents were struggling to understand the intensity of emotions she was experiencing.

Emily started having a hard time going to school, often refusing to attend, and struggled to listen to her parents. Emily’s emotions seemed overwhelming at times. Emily’s anxiety wasn’t always visible to her parents, making it difficult to figure out how to best support her through these tough moments.

After assessing Emily, we worked together to explore what might be going on for her. The assessment helped rule out any learning difficulties or cognitive issues and highlighted the need to support Emily’s emotional regulation.

We offered a combination of individual sessions with Emily, parent-child sessions, and separate sessions with her parents.

We focused on giving Emily the emotional support she needed while also helping her parents understand how to guide her when feeling overwhelmed. This included practical advice on managing outbursts, supporting Emily with regulation strategies, and rebuilding the parent-child relationship to foster a better sense of trust and understanding.

This process helped Emily and her parents start to make progress, feeling more confident in their approach to her emotions and anxiety.

With the right support in place, Emily began to feel more grounded, and her parents felt better equipped to help her navigate difficult emotions.

Parenting a child through anxiety can be tough, especially when it’s not always clear why they’re struggling.

With the right guidance and strategies, it’s possible to create a calmer, more understanding environment where both you and your child feel supported.
